Visit the city Valencia

Visit the city Valencia

Compared to other cities in Spain such as Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia is a lot smaller. The sights are relatively close to each other, and the centre is compact. It allows you to reach most places on foot and you do not have to use public transport. Besides, Valencia is more complete than in other cities.

Barcelona also has sights, gastronomy and beach, but the weather, for example, is often a lot less beautiful. Seville and Madrid are lovely cities to soak up culture, shop and enjoy tapas; however, these two are not on the beach, which makes it sometimes tricky in the summer.

A whole list of reasons to travel to Valencia! Here are some things you should do when you go to Valencia.

The centre of Valencia

One of the things you should not miss is the centre of Valencia. Most of the sights are located in the centre. Famous squares that are worth a visit are called Plaza de la Virgen, Plaza de la Reina and Plaza Ayuntamiento. Around this you will find the cathedral of Valencia, but also the town hall, for example, is a picture. Those who love museums can visit the L’Almoina, where the principles of the city can be seen. If you take a different street in the centre, you will end up at the old silk exchange La Lonja and opposite the Mercado Central, the covered food market. They seem like a lot of places, but if you don’t go in anywhere, you can do all of this on a morning walk.

Enjoy a typical Valencian lunch.

Valencia is known for its delicious paellas. The main ingredients of this lunch dish are rice, chicken, beans and sometimes snails. The Valencian families make a delicious paella, especially on Sundays for lunch, to enjoy with the whole family. On the other hand, it is also possible to eat a paella during dinner, but most Valencians, and tourists, choose to enjoy this dish for lunch among the Spaniards.

By bike!

What you should definitely do and therefore a must in Valencia is to go cycling. The city is becoming increasingly accessible by bicycle with more cycle paths. For example, you can explore the Turiapark by bicycle and get to the beach quickly. For example, rent your bike at the Verrassend Valencia Tours and Bike Rental shop. Bike tours also start from here. During a bike tour, you see a large part of Valencia in three hours, you stop for a drink where you get a lot of extra tips, and in between, you also receive a tasting surprise. When you rent the bikes at Verrassend Valencia, you can be sure that you will discover the city in a relaxed way. The bikes come from the Netherlands, are sturdy, but have a lightweight.

Experience the fallas between the Valencians

Experience the emotion of the mascletà’s fireworks. Pass some of the 750 monuments that fill the city with satire and humour. Enjoy the fragrance after the flower tribute in the Plaza de la Virgen. Spend the evening between firecastles, concerts and street parties—breakfast with buñuelos and chocolate milk. And if your body can still take it, go to some despertà. These are just a few of the things that await you when you go to Valencia between 15 and 19 March. Do you dare?

Encourage the best teams in the Spanish league.

Experience the emotion of premier league football in the Mestalla or Ciudad de Valencia stadiums. From mid-August to early June, you can catch Valencia CF and Levante UD matches and cheer on some of the best players in the world.

To the beach of Valencia

Valencia is the ideal city for a combination of a sun holiday and a city trip. It has about 7 km of city beach and consists of the beaches of Playa de la Malvarrosa and Las Arenas / Cabanyal. A beautiful boulevard with palm trees runs along, and there are restaurants in various places. You don’t see beach bars as we know them, and the nice chiringuitos that I remember from a visit to Valencia years ago are no longer there, but it is a beautiful place to spend a warm day; stick around to eat or –if you are afraid that that will be too late – go for an extensive lunch.

El Carmen street art

One of the most striking and unique features of Valencia is not a piece of architecture or natural wonder, but the incredible art paintings along the walls of the bohemian El Carmen neighbourhood. Colourful and vibrant, this is not a quick aerosol job but takes hours of painstaking work from local artists using mixed media. Some murals change quite frequently. Others become a longer-term part of the area’s charm. See huge murals around Plaça del Tossal and in the open space around Carrer d’En Gordo, with its abandoned, crumbling buildings adorned with the work of local street artists.

Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias

At the end of the Turia park, you will find Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias or the City of Arts and Sciences. You must see these beautiful architectural buildings if you have been to Valencia. You are free to view these buildings and take beautiful pictures, but if you want you can visit the Museum of Science in one of the buildings.

The oldest fresh market in Europe

Mercat Central is the largest covered fresh market in the old town of Valencia. It is located behind plaza del Ayuntamiento and is the oldest covered market in Europe. Mercat Central is not only frequented by tourists but also by Spaniards who do their daily or weekly shopping there. The building has space for more than 300 merchants where everything is traded such as vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, olives, nuts you name it. You will also find one of the most popular bars in Valencia, Central bar. Here you can enjoy delicious tapas with a drink. If you visit this restaurant, make sure you get there early, because the unique bar is becoming increasingly popular.
